April Alumni Association Board Meeting Minutes

Cindee Reed was present to discuss the teacher Retirement Reception. We decided to hold the reception for Jim Sleister, George Vedder, Joan Carruthers, and Ann Schach on Sunday June 6th, 2010 from 2-4 pm at the West Burlington Christian Church. It will be an informal event and the Alumni Association will provide cake, punch and coffee. We will also set up a table for membership applications and upcoming events that the Alumni Association will be holding in the near future. Cindee said that they would be running a video loop of the teachers through the years that would play throughout the afternoon. They will also be going around with a video camera asking people to talk about some of their memories of the teachers being honored. Mary motioned to keep the event at the church on Sunday and Julie seconded. Mary will book the church, Cindee will confirm with the teachers and we will let Tara Thuleen figure out a budget and get back to us at the next meeting for approval. It was also decided to give the church a donation from the association for the use of their facilities.

Mike Shinn went over the treasurers report that we all got a copy of. Really nothing to report except that we need to watch how much money we make on fundraising. Our gross fundraising receipts can not be over 35% of total receipts to keep our tax exempt status. When we get the 501(c)(7) status, this will not be an issue. Mary paid for the post office box ($44) for the annual fee, and Mike will reimburse her.

We still have no interest in a fundraising chairperson. Mary will talk to Corey Ellerbrock to see if he has any interest, at least to get us through the 4th of July celebration. Andy will again put a message on Facebook and the Alumni site to raise awareness.

We stuffed envelopes for the graduating seniors parents, asking them to give the gift of membership to the Alumni Association for their graduate. At our next meeting we were asked by Amy to come up with ideas to draw more members. We also talked about doing some monthly events soon. The first of course, will be the teachers retirement reception in June, next will be the 4th of July celebration. Andy will be contacting The Drake and talking with Vern Reed and his band about playing at The Drake on the outside patio in August. September may include an Alumni night at a Burlington Bee’s game and then October will be our Homecoming event.

Next scheduled meeting is Thursday May 13th at 5:30.
